Pubs Are Shut: Listen to CABBAGE’s New Single
The planet
is on lock down. We are amidst a global pandemic and it’s frightening. We can’t
leave our houses and most terrifying of all, the pub’s are shut. Fuck.
But hang
on, Mossley’s controversial punks are invigorated and back and are here to relieve
your concerns and nurture your boredom with the first single since last year’s
standalone track.
‘You’ve Made An Art Form (From Falling To Pieces)’ is the new record from CABBAGE as they continue fueling the rumours that a second album is on its way.
‘You’ve Made An Art Form (From Falling To Pieces)’ is the new record from CABBAGE as they continue fueling the rumours that a second album is on its way.
The
track name comes from a 1988 Coronation Script in which Deirdre remarks to Ken,
“I wonder what advanced state of dither we’ll find you in today, Ken. You
make and art from falling to pieces”. CABBAGE co-front man, Joe Martin adds,
“We don’t mind sharing our complete love and adoration for those old, hilariously
crafted dialogues.”
Throwing
themselves into a new sound that tastefully differs from their trademark
post-punk allure, this track possesses a new wave, indie-rock style that suits
the five piece tremendously. The song is described as “a brutally honest
exploration of mental health and suicide within young men and the survivalist,
Victoria Wood-esque juxta positioning of salvaging a smile through dreariness
and despair”. Under this extremely intense
description, the song shows soft similarities to Super Furry Animals and with this
more organic direction, this could be the start of a brand new chapter for CABBAGE.
The
trademark CABBAGE characteristics are still apparent making it easily recognisable
as them; they have also maintained the twangy, unpolished finish that acts as the
spur for their quirkiness. However, ‘You’ve Made An Art Form (From Falling To Pieces)’
is their most melodic tune yet and hopefully isn’t the last hint the band give
us for a new album.
Containing
soft backing vocals and a less intense approach could we be seeing a new side
to CABBAGE? We are used to the concept of them screaming in our faces about freeing
Steven Avery, forcing their political opinions down our throats and telling us
stories about wanking in people’s quiche. This melodic and mature approach has
the means to shows us a whole new side to CABBAGE and as they continue to fuel
second album whispers, we can sit back and enjoy this track whilst locked in
our houses throughout this global pandemic.
